Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

Now more than ever, Guide Dogs for the Blind is committed to fostering a culture where Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D.E.I) are at the heart of who we are. As an organization dedicated to creating a more accessible world for people who are blind and visually impaired, we recognize the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in advancing our mission and in fostering a workplace where all people—regardless of background, identity, or ability—feel valued for who they are, the skills they bring, and the unique perspectives they contribute.

At GDB, we share collective responsibility for creating a community where everyone, from our employees to the people we serve, experiences a sense of belonging and empowerment. We are committed to advocating for the rights of individuals who are blind or visually impaired, and helping create a world that embraces diversity in all its forms. We know that to create lasting impact, we must continuously strengthen our efforts to be more inclusive, equitable, and accessible, and we are dedicated to making this vision a reality in everything we do.

To date, we have championed research and national efforts such as:

  • The creation of a DEI Workgroup in 2018 to drive educational and communications efforts with staff around issues like unconscious bias and blindness etiquette.
  • Expanding ways to meet clients where they are, including in-home and on-campus training options.
  • Ongoing advocacy work that includes research and an awareness campaign on rideshare denials.
  • Launching our Careers and Canine Connections Program, a free weeklong workshop to help prepare young adults who are blind and visually impaired to enter the workforce with confidence and understand how a guide dog might fit into that plan.

In the coming weeks and months, you will see GDB ensuring our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is even more prominent and public-facing through communications, media, and advocacy efforts.
