Socialization Guide: Puppy Slumber Party

Overnight sleepovers can be a lot of fun for both people and puppies! We want to make sure that guide dog puppies have positive experiences, no matter if they’re sleeping in their own bed or somewhere new.

Why It’s Important
During their time in puppy raising, all GDB puppies will need to spend some time at a sitter’s home, or you might have vacation plans that require staying at a hotel or campsite. Clients and their guide dogs travel and go on vacations too! We want to be sure our pups are prepared for overnight adventures regardless of who they’re with or where they are.

Getting Ready for your Trip

1. Pack your bags: Just like you, puppies need to pack supplies in preparation for trips. Don’t forget the basics like food, water, bowls, leash, poop bags, any medications they’re currently taking, and plenty of toys.
2. Create a cozy space: Bring a familiar crate and comfy bedding with you so the pup has a designated space to rest and relax.
3. Maintain routines: As best as you can, stick to your puppy’s regular feeding, potty, and exercise schedules. This helps them feel more comfortable and reduces the stress of going somewhere new.
4. Safety first: Just in case the unexpected happens, make sure the puppy is wearing their GDB ID tag and you know the closest emergency vet clinics in your area. A canine first aid kit is always good to keep on hand too.
5. Understand Regulations: Whether you’re camping or staying at a hotel, be sure to familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations regarding service dogs in training. Some campsites and hotels welcome our guide dog puppies, so check before you travel!

Tips for a Relaxing Sleepover

Hotel & Home Rentals

• Try and find dog-friendly accommodations – not all hotels and home rentals welcome dogs, even guide dog puppies.

Campsite

• Introduce the pup to camping gear like tents, sleeping bags, and camping chairs before your trip. You can set them up inside your home or in your backyard for practice!
• Familiarize yourself with local wildlife and respect the natural environment around you.

Puppy Sitter Home

• Check with your sitters to see what supplies they have. You may need to bring more (or less) than you expect!
• Don’t forget to fill out the Puppy Sleepover Notes form (below) before you leave so they have all the necessary info about your puppy.
• If the puppy is staying with a friend who is not a GDB puppy raising volunteer, provide completed forms from the Friends and Family Puppy Sitting Packet (below) for their reference while you are away.
