Boarding Kennel Guidelines
These are guidelines for GDB puppies being boarded at a commercial boarding kennel. As needed, GDB will cover basic boarding fees with pre-approval by the puppy raising field manager (PFM).
Only kennels that have indoor/outdoor runs should be approved. We recognize that in some areas this type of facility is challenging to find; however, they are necessary so puppies are not expected to relieve indoors. The impact to relieving behaviors on a GDB puppy needs to be considered when considering the suitability of a facility.
Local dog clubs and trainers may have information about commercial boarding kennels and offer recommendations. Not all kennels have a high online presence, and the local dog community is a good resource.
- Your GDB club leader or PFM should be listed as an emergency contact for the puppy (beside yourself).
- Puppies must have received their 20-week vaccines and be current on all GDB required vaccinations including Bordetella.
- The puppy should be fed their regular diet (please provide).
- Non-destructive kennel enrichment activities (food-stuffed toys, puzzle toys, lick mats, snuffle mats) are encouraged (you may supply frozen stuffed Kongs and a favorite toy or two if the facility accepts).
- Water must be accessible at all times.
- Puppies may only play with one other dog at a time. Play must be supervised; no large group playtime/running/co-housing, etc.
- Females in-season should be specifically brought to the attention of staff when booking so that they may be housed appropriately. Absolutely no contact with intact males.
- Free time in a yard and leashed adventure walks outside of the kennel run are encouraged.
- Non-GDB trained handlers are not permitted to take the puppy on public outings in jacket.
