Preparing a Puppy Emergency "Go Bag"
Emergencies can happen at any time in any environment. We recommend creating a puppy “go bag” that can be ready to use, just in case. The following suggestions can help you get started:
- Food: Keep at least three days of food in an airtight, waterproof container.
- Water: Store at least three days of water specifically for the pup, in addition to water you need for yourself and your family.
- Medicines and medical records: Keep an extra 7-day supply of any medications the puppy may need on a regular basis in a waterproof container.
- Canine first aid kit: Most kits should include cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors; antibiotic ointment; flea and tick prevention; latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol, and saline solution. You may also consider including a pet first aid reference book.
- Collar with ID tag, leash: All GDB puppies should always wear their collar with its ID tag for identification. You may want to include a back-up leash in the emergency supply kit.
- Important documents: Place copies of general information about the puppy, the puppy ID card, vaccination documents and medical records in a clean plastic bag or waterproof container and add them to your kit.
- Crate, tie-down (easily accessible for quick exit)
- A recent picture of you and the puppy together: if you become separated from the pup during an emergency, a picture of you together will help allow others to assist you.
- Familiar items: Put favorite toys, treats, or bedding in your kit. Familiar items mixed with a novel item or two can help reduce stress.
- If you need to move the puppy to a local animal rescue facility, be sure to get the address and contact information.
- When you can safely do so, please reach out to your club leader, puppy raising field manager (PFM), or GDB.
